What Is Chambers and Partners?
Chambers and Partners is a London-based legal research company founded by Michael Chambers. It has published guides to the legal profession since 1990 and today ranks tens of thousands of lawyers and law firms in roughly 200 jurisdictions around the world. Its flagship U.S. publication, Chambers USA, is one of the most widely consulted guides to American law firms.
Unlike rankings that rely mainly on self-nomination or advertising, Chambers builds its rankings from independent research. Its research teams conduct hundreds of thousands of interviews and surveys each year with clients, in-house counsel and lawyers, and review the work firms have handled. Chambers states that there is no charge associated with a ranking, and firms cannot buy their way onto a list.
Why Chambers Is One of the Most Respected Legal Rankings
- Independent research. Rankings are based on what clients and peers say about a firm’s work, not on what a firm says about itself.
- Selectivity. Only a small number of firms are ranked in any practice area and location. In Columbus, three firms are ranked for Labor & Employment in the Spotlight guide.
- Used by decision makers. General counsel, executives and businesses rely on Chambers to evaluate and select outside counsel, which makes a Chambers ranking a meaningful signal of quality.
- Long track record. More than three decades of research have made Chambers a recognized standard in the legal industry worldwide.
What Is the Chambers Spotlight Guide?
Chambers created the Spotlight guide to highlight leading small and mid-sized firms in the United States, which Chambers notes are often overlooked in rankings dominated by large firms. Spotlight is limited to firms with fewer than 75 attorneys. Firms are selected by the Chambers research team, interviewed about their practices, and assessed by the Spotlight team against Chambers’ knowledge of the U.S. legal market. The 2027 guide ranks firms across 94 cities and regions and 61 practice areas.
For clients, a Spotlight ranking identifies firms that offer focused, partner-level attention while meeting the same research standard Chambers applies across its guides.
